The U.S. Senate voted 83-15 to let an $858 billion tax package backed by President Barack Obama and Republican leaders proceed toward a vote. The measure is expected to clear the Senate early this week and go to the House, where it faces a less certain future. The deal would extend Bush-era tax cuts for all income groups, extend unemployment benefits for 13 months and cut Social Security payroll taxes for one year. Full story here
