Although the issue was avoided by the major parties, Kuomintang and the Democratic Progressive Party, Taiwan's recent local elections brought the nation closer to some sort of union with mainland China, according to The Economist. The DPP usually leans toward independence from China, but in these elections, it avoided whipping up anti-mainland sentiment, recognizing the importance of Chinese business to Taiwan's economy. "Most Taiwanese see the economic integration with China as inevitable," the magazine notes.
